What’s a dad to do?

In Staten Island, New York, a video of a dad encouraging his son to fight a fellow student has gone viral.

“Right now punch him in the face,” the father says on the video. “Do it again!”

The community is stunned.

“I heard about it through the school, like it’s been spreading everywhere,” one student at P.S. 60 in Staten Island told WPIX, Channel 11.

It appears to be a cell phone video that was recorded two weeks ago after school hours.

Manuel Valdez told WPIX the two students on the video are classmates.

Parents at the school are in an uproar.

Should the dad have encouraged his son to walk away or was he doing the right thing?

“I tell my son all the time, if someone picks on you, defend yourself,” one dad said.

Another dad disagreed.

“He should have gone to the principal, (said), ‘My son is being bullied,’ if he’s getting bullied – and taken care of it the right way – not put his son to fight out in the street,” Luis Ramos told WCBS-TV. “What is that teaching his son?”

The ordeal is leading to a debate over what is appropriate behavior for a dad.

“While different families clearly have different ideas about what it means to become a man and different ideas about respect and self defense, we need to be really careful that were sending the message that conflict can be handled creatively and respectfully,” clinical child psychologist Dr. Jeanette Sawyer Cohen told WPIX.

What do you think? Weigh in and let’s get a dialogue going.
