Heading out to the hospital when your wife is in labor, you try to remember the important stuff like suitcases or contacting baby sitters if you have other kids.
But a camera?
This is not your typical story about how a dad uses a GoPro (NASDAQ:GPRO).
Troy Dickerson grabbed his GoPro and strapped it on his head as he drove his wife to the hospital at 1:35 a.m. in the Houston suburb.
He captured the entire ride to the hospital… and more!
And then he did what everybody seems to be doing nowadays: He posted the video on YouTube, and, you guessed it, the video is now making its way all over the world.
(WARNING: Video contains some graphic images and might be difficult for some people to watch.)
Dickerson says he knew the situation was serious, but as a dad two times over, the concept of child birth and heading to the hospital wasn’t exactly foreign to him.
“I wasn’t thinking, ‘Oh, we’ll have to deliver the kid,'” he told the Houston Chronical. “I didn’t think it was that dire of a situation.”
As his wife screamed in extreme pain 10 minutes into the drive, Dickerson hit the gas, passing cars and often exceeding 90 mph.
“I realized the baby was coming whether we wanted him to or not,” Kristin, a part-time birthing counselor told the paper. “I didn’t want to stop by the side of the road and call EMS, but sitting in a car is uncomfortable. Normally I would stand up or be in the bathtub. In this case, I didn’t have that luxury. I had to be sitting straight up.”
They got to the hospital, but did not make it inside.
“Oh, his head is coming out,” she shouts, camera rolling.
“Don’t push, don’t push,” Troy tells her.
Right there, she had her son standing up by the door of the car, right outside the hospital door.
The story is so wild, Good Morning America featured it this morning.
The GoPro, often used by athletes to videotape that first-person perspective, is already called the “World’s Most Versatile Camera.” Boy, you’re not kidding.
And speaking of boys, little Truett is healthy and doing fine.
Soon he’ll have a great story to tell about the day he was born. And if people don’t believe him, he’ll have the tape to prove it!
